Yesterday…

…I stopped by Barnes & Noble to grab a book on my to-read list, and was utterly disappointed to see that there were more bookcases dedicated to “Paranormal Romance” than to the neighboring “Teen” and “Teen Fantasy” sections combined.

C’mon people!

Okay, I confess. If dog-earing pages were a crime, then I would be guilty in the first degree. It’s become such a problem that I’m afraid to borrow books for fear of offending someone else’s book-reader sensibilities.

So I’ve decided to start changing my ways. Not because I have anything against dog-eared pages — wear-and-tear happens, and I can appreciate a book with some character — but because I see it as a way of having some control over a small-but-significant habit.

No, I won’t be reverting to using bookmarks, however tried-and-true they may be. (That would be too easy). Instead, I’m going to start memorizing page numbers. My reasoning is that if I can no longer remember my position in the book, I probably need to go back and re-read things anyways, so the page number no longer matters.

I’m hoping that this will encourage me to return to books while the page numbers are in my short-term memory, as I have a tendency to leave books unfinished and forgotten.

(Wish me luck I guess)

Until today I was only peripherally aware1 of Goodreads. After spending about two hours exploring the nooks and crannies of this amazing website, I’m completely hooked. It’s like Facebook but for books2, and each author is a celebrity.

It’s funny how something can come along one day and revitalize the way you manage an entire medium.

  1. “peripherally aware”?

  2. heh.. Bookbook
